Keeping Up with The Kardashians has
been on the air since 2007. It is viewed by millions of viewers every Sunday.
If you frequently click through the television stations and pass through E News
then you will see many reruns of the past seasons of the Kardashians being
played. The Kardashians consist of a family of five girls (Kourtney, Kim,
Khloe, Kendall, and Kylie) and one boy (Robert). The Kardashians have been on
air for over eight years, which you can see through how much they have changed
compared to the original seasons. It was inevitable that the family would
change because they are getting so much older but watching the new season that
aired this past Sunday night made me realize how much fame has got to them,
especially the youngest, Kylie.
Kylie Jenner started the show at
the age of ten. Now being eighteen, you can see how fame has not only matured
Kylie physically beyond her years but also made her a sex symbol in todays’ pop
culture. Kylie has had a lot of work done over the past year, such as; her lips
and boobs. She has changed her style and became a lot less innocent than she
once was. Kylie recently started dating rapper, Tyga, and has become part of a
different crowd.
I understand that Kylie is maturing
from a young girl to an adult in front of the world but I think that way she is
going about it might be giving the wrong idea off to girls that watch her show.
She has changed her appearance and to an extent objectified herself infront of
national TV. Kylie was naturally stunning and a lot of girls looked up to her.
By getting more and more work done, Kylie is making a lot more girls insecure
and feeling as if they need help being pretty. She has became a different person since the beginning of the the series and transformed physically to become unrecognizable. At age 17 she looks far beyond her years.
In the article, The Body Politic, by Abra Fortune Chernik, the author talks about how magazines, television shows, and celebrities influenced her decision to become anorexic. I find this article heartbreaking because I do not think that celebrities realize how much influence they have over some of their fans. Many young girls see Kylie’s transformation and think that getting work done will be the only way they can achieve success and become more beautiful.

I agree with what you said 100%. As much as people want to think that the media does not influence people, it does, especially in young girls. People watch keeping up with the Kardashians because the Kardashians are fashion icons and reality stars of today. It is honestly really sad how Kylie feels like she had to get all of this plastic surgery done to be considered beautiful. She was beautiful, but now she looks unnatural and her features are not proportional. She still looks fine, but she just looks more like a Barbie doll than a normal teenage girl. Many people compare Kylie with Malia Obama, because they are the same age, but Malia looks more age appropriate. Kylie can do whatever she wants, she has money and she is an adult now, but I wish that she would take her younger viewers in account. She should put out a more positive message about loving who you are, not just loving the plastic surgery you got.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you as well. I think that the amount of fame her family was receiving from the show Keeping Up with the Kardashians had a major impact on young Kylie. From a young age, she was being compared to her older sisters, even though there shouldn’t have been any comparing from the start. I think America was so invested in the Kardashians that it created an interested in how Kylie and Kendall would mature. However, when they finally grew up, their appearance didn’t fully resemble the typical Kardashian look (especially Kim’s). Both of them must have felt the pressure to conform to the look, however, Kylie caved in to the pressure from society. Kylie received multiple procedures to enhance her looks. Now, young girls feel as if they need to get work done in order to be beautiful by societies standards. The procedures are also expensive; which Kylie can afford because of her television show.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all that has been said about the Kardashian family, specifically Kylie. Due to the fact that she has all the money a teenage girl could ever need and the fame and public spotlight she is put in, she makes these decisions to get these procedures to get attention and fit what is expected by a celebrity. I do believe that Kylie makes these decisions because it is what she wants, however because of the family she was born into and their popularity, it is almost expected for her to take these actions in order to live up to the family name. As sad as it sounds, if she were to just live the normal life of a teenage girl and not get all caught up in the media, people wouldn't pay much attention to her most likely. Because of her family name, it is expected of her to follow the footsteps of her older sisters and undergo these types of procedures in order to fit in. It is a shame that one must look flawless and fake in order to be classified as beautiful in the eyes of society. As mentioned in other comments, many young girls admire Kylie and will try to mimic her every move in order to look like her and gain the attention that she receives. Women should be recognized for their natural beauty and personality, not admired for their fake body parts and large ego. Unfortunately, this is not the way society works nowadays, and the Kardashian family will continue to rule the celebrity world.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you are saying completely. I think what is happening to Kylie is extremely sad. I also think it is extremely scary. Growing up in the spotlight has impacted Kylie to point of making unhealthy decision. She has probably experience so much judgment and scrutiny growing up. She has always lived in her older sister’s shadows. So starting there she has had a lot of pressure on her. Pressure that, at that age, she probably could not handle or cope with. Social media is another thing that could have added to Kylie’s insecurity. Kylie has been a prevalent person on most social media outlets. Many of her follows would comment on her post pointing out her flaws. Kylie has grown up with her insecurities and flaws being thrown in her face. It is sad to say; but the decisions she has made are kind of expected. She has grown up in the shadow of her sisters and with her flaws pointed out. Any girl facing these challenges would probably do the same thing.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you're are stating. It is absolutely absurd that women younger than us yet so close to our age are thinking that it's acceptable and even necessary to have this type of work done to themselves in order to become more beautiful. Similar to how you compared this Kardashian topic to Chernik's article, "The Body Politic", I also connected this article to another discussion that I recently read on the internet about Kylie Jenner. Overall, it reflected many of the same discussion points you had mentions and circled around the main issue that someone who has not even been fully develoed physically or mentally into their body is seeking a doctor's scaffold to make herself feel better. It's upsetting and concerning that this is the evolving world we are living in and I can only hope that our generation can make a big enough of a difference to stop this nonsense!
